Aaron Welker, a graduate of GlenOak High School and The University of Akron, is in his fourth year with the Coventry Local Schools Instrumental Music Department serving as Director of Bands. Mr. Welker is the director of the Coventry High School Symphonic Band, the Coventry High School Concert Band, the Coventry High School Jazz Ensemble, the Coventry High School Marching Band, and DaFunk’d. He also assists with the bands at Coventry Middle School.
Mr. Welker graduated, cum laude, from The University of Akron in 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He was active in the music department at Akron performing with the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Brass Choir, Tuba Ensemble, “Ohio’s Pride” The University of Akron Marching Band, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and other various chamber ensembles. Mr. Welker was also active in honors organizations around the campus. Some of his collegiate honors include Pi Kappa Lambda (Music Honors Association) and Sigma Alpha Lambda (National Leadership and Honors Association). In his final semester at Akron, Mr. Welker student taught in the Perry Local School District.
Before coming to Coventry, Mr. Welker worked with the bands of the Northwest Local School District (serving as Director of Bands) and the Perry Local School District. During his tenure at Northwest, his bands participated in OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Events and earned straight Superior Ratings at the district and state levels. Aaron’s 8th grade band at Northwest Middle School also earned straight Superior Ratings at Junior High Contest. While at Perry, he directed the 6th Grade Band, assisted with the Perry Symphonic Winds and was the assistant director for the Perry Marching Panthers.
Mr. Welker holds a membership in the Ohio Music Education Association and also has a private lessons studio. His private students have earned consistent superior ratings at OMEA Adjudicated Events. He also has been a featured soloist with the Canton Concert Band and continues to perform with groups such as the Freedom Brass Band, The Singers Companye and local high school pit orchestras. Aaron currently resides in North Canton with his beautiful wife Marley, their two cats (Adeline and Barney), and dogs (Calvin and Daphne).
Beth Lewis is in her sixth year of teaching at Coventry Middle School. Her responsibilities include teaching 5th-8th grade band, middle school jazz band, and has assisted with the high school marching band.
Mrs. Lewis holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from The University of Akron. After completing her graduate work as a band teaching assistant, she taught in Green Local Schools as a long term substitute. Previously, she taught for four years in Ohio’s parochial schools.
Mrs. Lewis is an active member of The Ohio Music Education Association. In her spare time she also enjoys playing with the Sounds of Sousa Band and taking lessons on various instruments from her generous peers and colleagues.
Brandon Cummings was hired this summer as the Assistant Marching Band Director at Coventry High School for the 2018 season. Brandon graduated from Manchester High School and continued to the University of Akron where he received his Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education. While at Akron, Brandon was a member of Akron’s marching band, Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, Concert Band, and the basketball band, Blue and Gold Brass. As a member of these ensembles he had the opportunity to travel and perform at The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the Women’s NCAA Tournament, and several other places
Brandon was a student teacher at Cuyahoga Falls City Schools where he worked with the marching band, all four of the concert bands, pep band, the second jazz band, and the 6th and 7th grade ensembles at Bolich Middle School. Brandon has also taught at Strongsville’s and Stow’s band camps.
Brandon’s Primary instrument is the tuba and he enjoys performing with the Freedom Brass Band. In his free time, Brandon enjoys spending time with his family, watching sports, and being outdoors.
Brandon has enjoyed working with the students in Coventry’s band program through band camp and is looking forward to a season full of hard work, great performances and team work to reach our goals as an ensemble. GO COMETS!
Taylor Rook is in her first year of working with the Coventry High School Bands. Taylor graduated from Perry High School in 2016 and is currently pursuing a degree in flute performance from The University of Akron. While in high school Taylor was in Perry High School Symphonic Winds, Perry High School Marching Panthers, and The Canton Youth Symphony Orchestra for 4 years. Taylor was also selected to participate in the 2016 Ohio All-State Band. While at Akron, Taylor has participated in numerous ensembles including “Ohio’s Pride” The University of Akron Marching Band, The University of Akron Concert Band, an undergrad quintet “Ursa Major”, and The University of Akron Flute Choir. Taylor was also selected to play in a Marina Piccinini master class.
During the spring of 2018, Taylor worked with the flute ensemble at McKinley High School and currently teaches private lessons.
M.J. Fabian is in his first year of working the the percussion section of the Coventry High School Bands. He is a graduate of Humboldt State University in 2016. After graduation he moved to Ohio to pursue his Masters degree in Percussion Performance in 2017.
He is currently studying at the University of Akron (with Distinguished Professor Dr. Larry Snider). M.J. serves as a graduate assistant for the Percussion and Dance department.
Marley Welker is in her third year of working with the Coventry High School Color Guard. She is a 2005 graduate of GlenOak High School and has been dancing and performing since the age of 3.
Marley is an active dancer, instructor, and choreographer at A Time To Dance Studio in North Canton, Ohio (where she has over 1o years of experience). Her areas of dance expertise include: Tap, Ballet, Irish, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Modern. Marley is the Artistic Director for the A Time To Dance Junior Company and also serves as the instructor for the ATTD Junior and Senior Kicklines.
Marley loves being a member of the band staff and is looking forward to another great year with the CHSMB Color Guard!
